This event has received funding from the Australian Government’s Future Drought Fund through the Long-term trials of drought resilient farming practices in Victoria project and from Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) through the Link between cereal stubble, subsurface acidity and crown rot project. This event is also supported by the Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority through the Extending results from the Soil CRC plant diversity project.
DROUGHT RESILIENCE PRACTICES AND CROWN ROT FIELD WALK, PLUS COVER & COMPANION CROPPING & LIVESTOCK FEEDING
Come along to find out more about how Riverine Plains is demonstrating innovative cropping, grazing and mixed farming practices to support drought resilience and associated risk management in Victoria.
Our Murchison demonstration site is investigating the inclusion of vetch in the rotation for sustainability and profitability, while we're also investigating the potential link between Fusarium crown rot, subsoil acidity and stubble management techniques to help farmers mitigate yield loss at a nearby demonstration site.
Join us for a Field Day and tour of these sites, as we take a practical look at a range of agronomic and system practices that can boost productivity and sustainability. We're also taking a closer look at livestock feeding and the role of cover and companion cropping in local systems.
Topics & speakers include:
- Long-term demonstration site — utilising vetch in a cropping rotation to improve drought resilience and help manage risk: Jane McInnes, Riverine Plains
- Feed budgeting, including tips for feeding livestock through winter and things to look our for when feeding for long periods: Nick Linden, Livestock Officer, Agriculture Victoria
- Crown rot trial site tour, including discussion on why crown rot is an emerging issue and the impact of different management strategies: Lee Menhennett, trial host, and Sabita Duwal, Riverine Plains
- The economics of cover cropping and companion cropping: Jane McInnes, Riverine Plains
The Field Day kicks off at 9am sharp and finishes at 1pm (includes lunch!), and also involves visits to the two demonstration sites, just a short drive apart.
