ABOUT THE PARTNERSHIP
The partnership between Riverine Plains and the Vic Hub is part of a broader national effort through the Drought Adoption and Innovation Hubs to help farmers and regional communities better prepare for, manage, and respond to drought.
In Victoria, the Hub is focused on strengthening drought resilience by supporting innovation and practical solutions that help farmers adapt to a changing and increasingly variable climate.
This work recognises that while drought is a normal part of the Australian landscape, its timing, severity, and duration are unpredictable. Planning ahead is therefore essential to reduce the economic, environmental, and social impacts that can affect farm businesses, communities, and the wider agricultural sector.
Through collaboration, the Hub brings together farmer experience, local knowledge, research, and new technologies to accelerate the development and on-farm adoption of practical tools and practices that improve long-term resilience.

VIC HUB Research & Extension project investments
The partnership between Riverine Plains and the Vic Hub supports farming communities across northeast Victoria to better prepare for climate variability through collaboration, innovation, and knowledge sharing, informed by ongoing consultation that helps shape targeted projects and capacity-building activities. As the northeast Node leader, Riverine Plains plays a key role in connecting communities to these opportunities through its established communication channels, including events, social media, email, and blog content.

Ryegrass is a major weed of cropping systems in the Riverine Plains. We are working with farmers, researchers and advisors to reduce the risk of herbicide-resistant ryegrass developing, to prevent significant productivity and profitability losses.

Good seasons, stubble retention and tight cereal rotations have favoured a build-up of Fusarium crown rot in the Riverine Plains. Crown rot can cause significant yield loss, and we are investigating the potential link between it, subsurface acidity and different stubble management techniques.
