Diagnosis frameworks for multiple and complex soil constraints

This project will help Australian farmers identify and ameliorate constrained soils, helping to improve soil health and productivity.

Term
2021-2024

Project Officer
Jane McInnes

WHY THIS PROJECT IS NEEDED

The productivity of 77% of Australian agricultural soils is limited by one or more soil constraints, however, efficiently ameliorating constrained soils often requires an accurate diagnosis.

In short: This project aims to help farmers diagnose soil constraints through the use of existing data sources, reducing costs for farmers and enabling improvement in soil productivity.

Project focus

This project will develop and validate diagnostic methodologies that can diagnose soil constraints, using data that producers already have access to (e.g., crop yields, surface soil tests), in combination with information in the public domain (e.g. national soil grid, Landsat imagery). This will reduce the cost associated with detailed soil sampling to farmers diagnosing complex and multiple soil constraints in their paddocks.

This project, in combination with other current and future activities within and outside of the Soil CRC, will lead to an improvement in the function (productivity, environmental and social) of constrained soils in Australia.
