Riverine Plains Inc In-Season Update: For the farmer by the farmer
Local farming systems group Riverine Plains Inc will host its annual In-Season Update at the Yarrawonga Mulwala Golf Club Resort on Thursday 9 August, 2018.
“The Update is an important event on our calendar and provides an opportunity for grain growers and advisors to consider the issues likely to impact broadacre crops this spring” said Riverine Plains Inc Executive Officer and event organiser, Fiona Hart.
“The dry start to the season is obviously a concern to farmers and our program aims to address this as well as those issues that affect management in the longer term” she said.
“To this end, DEDJTR Victoria Seasonal Variability Agronomist Dale Grey will speak on the seasonal outlook for spring, while a separate panel discussion will address dry season management and the trigger points for major decisions around grazing or crop salvage should conditions remain dry” added Fiona.
Weed seed management is a perennial problem and Riverine Plains Inc has been involved in a GRDC project evaluating the effectiveness of harvest weed seed control techniques. Riverine Plains Inc Project Officer Kate Coffey will discuss the results from this work, while Chairman Ian Trevethan will speak on his practical experiences with a range of harvest weed seed techniques.
Lockhart farmer Mark Day will also discuss his experiences with chaff decking and stubble management.
Riverine Plains Inc’s Research Officer, Dr Cassandra Schefe and Michael Straight from FAR Australia will provide an overview on the key outcomes from the Stubble Project, including results from the frost component of this work. Results from a project investigating the management of early-sown wheat for the region will also be discussed, along with an overview of other current projects.
The Update will be held at the Yarrawonga Mulwala Golf Club Resort in Golf Club Road Mulwala on Thursday 9 August from 9am to 1pm, with registrations open from 8.30am.
For catering purposes, pre-registrations for the In-Season Update must be received by 7 August 2018. Cost is $25 for Riverine Plains Inc members and $35 for non-members (payable on the day) and includes morning tea and lunch.
